Hampton Classic Horse Show: What to Know for 2024

If you’ve ever spent Labor Day weekend in the Hamptons, then you know that the Hampton Classic Horse Show is one of the biggest events of the year. It’s often referred to as the grand finale of the summer social season in the Hamptons.
But what exactly is the Hampton Horse Show, and why should you go? Here’s everything you need to know, including what to expect, tips for transportation, recommended attire and more.

What is the Hampton Classic?

The Hampton Classic is an annual horse-riding competition and social event in Bridgehampton, New York (which is part of the Town of Southampton). Founded in the early 1900s, the show takes place over Labor Day Weekend and includes a wide array of equestrian competitions, as well as boutique vendors, food, kids’ activities and other events. The Hampton Horse Classic brings some of the world’s greatest competitors to the Hamptons, but it’s not just for horse lovers. The event is considered one of the largest social bashes in the Hamptons and a celebration of the end of summer – so it’s a fun and unique experience for all.
When:
  • August 25 – September 1, 2024 (Main gates open at 8:30am daily)
Where:
  • 240 Snake Hollow Road, Bridgehampton, New York 11932

Can anyone go to the Hampton Horse Show?

Absolutely. The Hampton Classic is a ticketed event with open admission to all ages. The event draws large crowds that include celebrities, local residents, visitors from the city and tourists from around the world. While it’s considered an elite event for both the Hamptons and the horse-jumping world, it’s family-friendly and offers something for everyone.

Transportation
Traffic on Long Island can be intense during Labor Day weekend, so be sure to plan your trip accordingly if you’re driving or using a Hamptons car service. As a rule of thumb, the best time to travel to the Hamptons by car is between 9am-1pm on a weekday (to avoid morning traffic) or early Saturday/ Sunday morning.

If you’re coming from the city, public transportation is available via the LIRR, but using a car service is generally the most convenient and comfortable option. Call us at Jackrabbit Limo at (631) 600-7700 if you need transportation service to the Hampton Classic from NYC, JFK Airport, LGA or other locations in NYC and Long Island.

What to Wear

“Fancy hats” and country-club-inspired attire are common at the Hampton Classic, but there are no dress requirements. The website suggests that “country-casual wear” is fine and recommends that people wear attire that is comfortable, since the event is outdoors and often hot. Comfortable shoes are most important, since you’ll be walking around on grass and gravel.

How Much Does It Cost?

Daily admission to the Hampton Classic is $20 per car, paid at the entrance. However, Monday, Aug. 26 is free (when there are no competitions). Tuesday through Thursday is free for seniors, veterans, current members of the military, or those who bring 3 or more nonperishable food items for the Sag Harbor Food Pantry.

Additional tickets are required if you wish to sit in the grandstands for the Longines Hampton Classic Grand Prix on the final Sunday of the show. Tickets go on sale August 1.

Anything Else You Should Know?

  • Outside food is permitted, but you may not bring alcoholic beverages into the Classic. (Alcoholic drinks are available for purchase from various licensed bars inside.)
  • Dogs are permitted into the showgrounds if they are on a leash, but they are generally discouraged. There are many areas that dogs are not allowed to enter, including the Boutique Garden and food service areas.
  • Weather: generally the show is “rain or shine,” but competitions may be canceled if the weather is dangerously severe.
